" Chinese mothers who underwent doing-the-month rituals had a greater sense of restfulness, mindfulness, maternal self-esteem, and confidence to breastfeed and learn about infant care. "

(Excerpts from the 2021 study 'Immigrant Southeast and East Asian mothers’ transnational postpartum cultural practices: A meta-ethnography'. DOI 10.1177/17455065211060640)
- Three themes emerged: (1) importance of maintaining postpartum cultural practices; (2) barriers of “doing the month”; and (3) modification: practicality over tradition.
- Some Southeast and East Asian (SEEA) mothers, immigrant and non-immigrant alike, still observe postpartum cultural practices to the extent that it is practical and affirms their cultural identity.
- Therefore, before maternity care providers meet with SEEA perinatal mothers, they should first attempt to understand the cultural background, including their history, social structure, cosmology, and traditional healing practices.
Dr Kristal Lau will teach you the ins-and-outs and hone your practical skills to provide culturally sensitive postpartum care. Get the full program booklet below!

What Our Graduates say

Sharon Jensen

" It truly broadened my knowledge and awareness of what good postpartum care needs to look like and has provided me with
strategies to educate families with that are practical, as well as scientifically / medically sound. To anyone that would like to gain a greater understanding of hollistic postpartum care, in a modern world, and anyone who is working with families to assure
quality care for women and families in the post partum period, take this course, listen and learn. "

mandy lee
entrepreneur, France/malaysia
" What I truly appreciated about the Postpartum 30 Practitioner Certificate is how it directly addresses [different cultures within families]. It takes a holistic approach, touching on the cultural, emotional, and practical aspects of postpartum care, and
shows practitioners how to support families like mine with sensitivity and knowledge. The biggest gain was the reassurance that there is a way to honour traditions while also making choices that suit our unique family situation. "

angy dieckmann
newborn care specialist, usa/germany
" The certificate was very extensive and comprehensive. Dr Lau wove the nuances of Chinese medicine and cultural practices into a method of postpartum care that pertains to women ( and men) of all cultures. She carefully outlined strategies to help families work together to assure that women have the opportunity to heal from childbirth physically and emotionally, and outlined ways for spouses to be intimately involved in the process."
